Sailing on Packanack Lake
in the fall with the leaves changing colors is a wonderful way to spend a day.
Having lunch on the yacht club deck overlooking the lake is not a bad place to
have lunch either. The sailing on the
other hand is a little more difficult. Although we did have plenty of sunshine
and the temperature was quite reasonable, the wind was another story. I call
these conditions heavy and variable. 0
to 15 wind gusts to 20 oscillating from the Northeast through the Northwest.
Even in the 20 mph gusts you didn't dare fully hike out because you could get
auto tacked at any minute. It was truly survival sailing. You needed to be on
your toes and ready to react to what the boat was going to do next. Susan and I
were lucky enough to survive a little better than the other boats. It truly was
a challenge. We finished in 2 races before lunch and one race after lunch. In first place overall were Doug and Susan
Brown. Finishing in second place on a tie breaker was Sue Clark and Debbie
Cummings over third place Charlie Engler and Ellen Greenhorn. Forth and fifth
place also came down to a tie breaker with Scott and Bob Higgins who finished
second in the last race edging out Dave and Justin Veno in there newly acquired
Jet 1150 Dave has been out of sailing for a few years but from the look of
things he will be back up to speed very quickly.
