January 4 (JetFrost #4)

We had an excellent installment of JetFrost on January 7, although it wasn’t too frosty.  Rather, we enjoyed sunshine and temperatures nearing 70 degrees.  Felt like a Spring regatta!  The wind started off from the South at about 5-10 knots.  In race number 2, the wind died just after the start and began the process of shifting about 100 degrees to the West.  In the swirling 1 knot breeze, all boats were clumped tightly together, and every boat had the lead at some point in the race.  Prior to race #3, and for the rest of the day, the breeze was from the West and gusty (sometimes approaching 20 knots).  Running an excellent RC, Kate and Max and Joe Fernon adjusted the previous windward - leeward course to a modified triangle course that had the Jets reaching on one leg across the strengthened breeze.  It was a blast to plane along toward the next mark!

As always, one of the best parts of the racing was the excellent food at the end of the day.  Kate and Max made some incredible chili, homemade guacamole, and hummus!  Delicious!

Here are the final results:

1 - Scott and Aubrey (winning a tiebreaker)

2 - Eric and Cathy

3 - Walt and Dave

4 - Darren and Lindsey

5 - Ed Lutz

The next event is this Saturday, January 21.  Hope to see you there.

December 17 (JetFrost #3)

We had a terrific day out on the water last Saturday!  Eight boats came out and enjoyed a steady 10-15 knots in bright sunshine and temps in the mid-40’s.  Michael Parramore ran RC along with Bo and Wills Green and Scott’s dad, Joe.  We got in seven races (if I remember correctly) and several boats did some crew swapping to let even more people get in on the action.  We had two capsizes, but thankfully everyone managed to get back aboard and underway without injury.

December 17

At the top of the results, James and Pete McKenna narrowly won a tie breaker with Scott and Aubrey.  We had two new sailors, Andrew and Elizabeth, that came out and burned up the course.  After a couple races getting used to the boat, they really had 1091 moving and ended up finishing in 3rd overall.  Here’s a list of final results:

1- James and Pete

2- Scott and Aubrey

3- Andrew and Elizabeth

4- Eric and Cathy

5- Walt and Trish

6- Darren and Griffin

7- Kate and Max R.

8- Ainsley, Kate, Ed

One of the best parts of our JetFrost series is the post-race chili fest in the clubhouse.  Last weekend, though, we had an extra special treat after the racing.  Laury Parramore, with a bit of help from some of the Jetters, arranged for a surprise birthday party for Michael’s birthday (which is today!).  What a great time!  There was excellent food and drink, a fire going, and lots and lots of people.  There were many Jet sailors and other friends in attendance.  Too bad we can’t have a party like that after every race (maybe we should)!

Next JetFrost is January 7.  Let me know if there are any volunteers for RC/food.

We had our first JetFrost of 2011-12 last Saturday, and it turned out to be a great day!  The wind was from the South and a bit stronger than forecast--about 8-10 with gusts around 15.  Temps were comfortable in the mid 50's and the sun was shining.  Best of all, the Severn was nearly empty.  It really is the best time of the year to sail on the Chesapeake, IMO!

Celeste, Walt, and the Jirons came out and raced, and chili-chef-extraordinaire, Randy Bruns, did RC and made some great chili!  Doug and Susan Brown were on their way down from NJ when a broken valve stem on their trailer tire and a grinding wheel bearing forced them to turn back not once, but twice!  They still made it down to enjoy a weekend in Annapolis, but sans boat.  Doug and Susan plan to be down for our Dec. 17 installment of JetFrost.

With the sometimes strong and gusty wind, Celeste opted to stay near the harbor while Walt and his son, Ronnie, did some match racing with Griffin and me.  We had a great time, as the races were pretty close.  Walt came away with 4 of the 6 races, although it could have been an even 3-3 if the makeshift jib sheets that I had borrowed from Randy had not gotten tangled around the forestay on race #1  (hey, I have to blame it on something!).

The next JetFrost is December 3, and we need an RC/food volunteer.  Let me know if you can help.
