July 26
Seven boats braved the forecast of high winds and possible thunderstorms and were treated to a pleasant afternoon of racing. As sailors rounded the Lorain Harbor Lighthouse and headed towards the racecourse, winds were out of the west southwest at a velocity of 6-12 mph. Jets had the third start, after the Stars and Interlakes.
Race 1 set the tone for the day, which was a long weather leg, thirty degree shifts, slight chop, and many lead changes. After four races, team Parker took first followed by Marion Zaugg and Dave Michos, who tied for second. Lee Sackett and Ernie Michaud rounded out the top five.
After racing, sailors returned to the club only to learn that Marion had more tricks up his sleeve. Not only is he fast on the water, he is fast on land as well! We had never so concerned as when Marion climbed onto his crew’s sport bike. Next thing we know, he fires it up and takes off! After being out of sight for at least 15 minutes, the fleet began to worry and started to assemble a search and rescue mission. Just then, everyone heard the rumble of his return. By his grin, it was obvious this wasn’t his first rodeo!
